Re: Elizabeth Fisher's Petition for an amendment to SEC. 571.209 Standard No.
209, Seat Belt Assemblies.
Dear Administrator:
I am writing in support of Elizabeth Fisher's petition to amend Federal Regulation
49CFR571.209.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and President Clinton's Buckle
Up America campaign are asking America to buckle up. In order for all Americans
to buckle up, vehicle manufacturers must be required to manufacture seat belt
assemblies that fit all people, not just those who weigh less than 215 lbs.
Vehicles come in all shapes and sizes, just like people, and if a person fits
in a vehicle, they ought to be able to buckle their seat belt. I myself weigh
over 215 lbs. and I currently own 2 vehicles. One is a Toyota Sienna and the
other is a Nissan Sentra. I can however were the seat belt in the Toyota, but
the Nissan seat belt will not fit around me so I therefore have to ride around
in the vehicle without a seat belt.
Maybe you donšt care about my life or the lives of the others that are in the
same situation, but I do. I believe it should be made for everyone to be safe
on the road and I know that if I am in an automobile accident that I would like
to know that just maybe the seat belt could save my life and allow me to live
longer with my family just like it would yours. If you take into consideration
all of the people that are not currently wearing a seat belt when in a vehicle
then half the population is not safe while on the road inside a vehicle. I ask
and my family ask that you please take into consideration the people that you
could possible save with changing the law to accommodate the larger size people
also.
Sincerely,
Lori & Pramote Karngkarn
